In future the Federation of Swiss Protestant Churches (FSPC) will have a representative at the Conference of European Churches (CEC) in Strasbourg. The delegates of the FSPC decided this at their autumn assembly in Berne. The Assembly of Delegates voted to send an FSPC representative through the Commission of Swiss Churches Abroad (CSCA). This will make it possible for the FSPC Council to become more involved in the work of the ‘Church and Society’ commission of the CEC.
The FSPC strengthens the CEC in its concern to give the faith communities a central role in building up Europe as a community of peace and shared values and incorporating them into current conversations. The FSPC supports the promotion of democracy along the lines of a Europe of regions, respect for human rights and human dignity, especially in dealing with migrants. It shares the aims of the European social charter and seeks a responsible economic policy for the European Union (EU) as a community of shared values. The creation of a post at the CEC broadens the possibilities which the FSPC and its member churches have of engaging in and contributing to the European discussion that is being carried on in society and in the Swiss churches.
The CEC comprises all the Protestant, Anglican, Old Catholic and Orthodox churches of Europe and is the recognized partner in the dialogue with European institutions in Brussels and Strasbourg. Through the CEC the churches bring their interests and make their contribution to the discussion of values in the building-up of the EU and in the Council of Europe,
The national legislature of the Evangelical-Reformed and Methodist churches of Switzerland, which meets twice a year, has been meeting today in Berne Town Hall and will end tomorrow, Tuesday 7 November, at mid-day.
